February 2, 2019: More and more new faces
This sunny Barcelona winter evening we were able to collect 16kg along the beach of Barceloneta. We went all the way to the stones of the mole, where people carelessly drop their bottles, cans and trash between the stones. As soon as the water rises (which is quite common in winter) all this garbage gets washed into the sea.
On the other hand do people stop and watch or even talk to us every time we do our cleanups. Everyone who sees such an activity will think twice about dropping his waste next time. It is not only about the cleanup itself, it is also about sending a visual message.
January 26, 2019: We did it!We beat our record with 18 people and almost 40kg of garbage! We really are an awesome team. This is the pic of the committed people from all around the world helping our world. it is what gives us the energy to come to the beach no matter the weather every Saturday and try to do a little good.
January 19, 2019: People are actually listening
Another awesome day helping our planet along with the best people. Coming every Saturday with the right attitude and doing their best to clean our beach deserves
our and everybody's recognition and respect.
We must say that that Saturday Barceloneta wasn't as dirty as on other occasions, but we don't rest and won't do it as long as there's one plastic bag that could end up in the ocean.
We are very happy that some of the people that see us regularly and that have talked us, like local vendors and artist, are changing their habits.
We have so much work left to do, and we are convinced that TOGETHER WE CAN, so join us today and let's fight the ocean pollution together.
January 12, 2019: Welcome back!
Coming back fresh and strong into the new year we broke our record again and collected 25.85kg with this great team. We were so happy to have all these friendly faces around us again and were especially grateful for all the volunteers that kept going during the holidays and organized their own cleanups!!
December 15, 2018: Winter is coming
We are so thankful for all the people that joined us again on a Saturday to clean up the beach of Barceloneta!! We were able to collect 16 kg and covered the whole beach from the water to the promenade.Thank you to all the volunteers, that stayed with us through the winter!
December 8, 2018: A calm evening at the beach
The beach is getting emptier and emptier from weekend to weekend and we use these days to prepare it for the next season. We collected 11.85kg of trash. These days it is mostly the small things that we find, such as cigarette butts. These are especially dangerous, because animals can mistake them for food. Please make sure that every single part of your trash gets into the bin!
December 1, 2018: We are family
After one and a half month we made the biggest jump ever in the number of volunteers. 17 people decided to spend this Saturday with us and do good, while enjoying the fresh air and sun. The two guys with the longest arms went all the way to the stones and came back with a huge amount of plastic and glass bottles. While they were hanging in the gaps, it was great to see how many mothers stopped with their children to explain how important it is to take care of the environment. This is the impact we wanna make! With the rest of the crew spreading over the other rest of the beach and parts of the promenade, we were able to collect 19 kg, another record. We were so happy to welcome a family of five into our group. Unfortunately they were not able to make it into the picture, but the kids were so active in filling up their bag and were such a great support to us. This gives us so much energy to keep going!
November 24, 2018: Autumn from its most beautiful side
With eight people we spread all over the sunny beach of Barceloneta this Saturday and the sun gave us all the energy we needed to collect awesome 14.75 kg of trash. Furthermore, were we interested in how many cigarette butts we would find and brought an empty sauce glass to collect them separately. This was not enough by far. In only 20 minutes and not even 50 meters along the beach, the whole glass was full. The far bigger amount of cigarettes needed to go into our bags. There is enough bins all along the beach, for any smoker to get up and walk 20 meters to leave the beach clean. No normal filter is biodegradable and would stay in the sand or even sea for ages, if our great volunteers would not pick up as much as possible every weekend. We are so thankful for each and every person that goes on a hunt for plastic and trash with us or alone or any other group all over the world.
November 17, 2018: The day after the storm
This Saturday was the first cleanup we carried out after a storm has hit the beach during the night before. This being the case means, that for kilometers along the coast a line of trash was washed onto the beach. Along with the trash, great amounts of wood found its way to Barceloneta. This made it harder to find the smaller pieces of plastic but the team did an awesome job and collected 13.45 kg of trash. It was incredible to find endless amounts of lollipop sticks. While they are always among the top items in our bags, this times they stood out between all the straws and cans.
We are extremely proud to have such dedicated volunteers. The wind was blowing very strong and the air was wet from the drops that were carried to the beach from the waves. All this did not matter to the girls and boys and we covered almost all of Barceloneta beach. For some reason it seemed as if the smiles were even bigger when we met again with full bags. We all felt great to be out at the beach in the wind and do our work.
November 10, 2018: Going for gold
In the last rays of sunlight we met on Saturday, not knowing that one hour later we would be part of a historic cleanup moment. We tackled the trash just like the week before, by splitting up and covering the whole length of the beach of Barceloneta. For the first time we were climbing through the stones that reach into the water. What we found there was any kind of trash you could imagine. These things have either been washed between the stones or simply left there by somebody enjoying the view of the sea. We tried to reach as deep into the gaps as possible but a major part of the rubbish stayed out of our reach and will probably stay for much longer, if it will not be removed professionally.
We all came together again from all different directions and weighted the full bags that we brought back. The result was astonishing. While we were by far not the biggest crew in the history of our cleanups, we broke the weight record of the trash that we collected with 15 kg! On top of that we were extremely happy about welcoming several new people to the group. The dedication that they showed made us very confident in the success of the coming cleanups, when we are gonna give it all again.
November 3, 2018: A beautiful sunset walk
After the rainy last weekend we were all very happy to be able to enjoy the beach for a calm and sunny Saturday evening. Our crew grew again and we are able to split into groups to scan a bigger part of the beach. One group walked towards the towers and clubs at Port Olimpic, while the others made it all the way to the end of the beach of Barceloneta. As always the people were very positive towards our efforts. Such moral support is always welcome.
On the other hand were the inherent problems of populated beaches visible everywhere. As the bars that have their terraces directly at the beach don't see a problem in serving drinks with plastic straws outside, we found many especially in these areas. When we met again at 18.00 at the sculpture of l'Estel Ferit we had collected a total of 10.40 kg of trash with seven people.
Due to the time change and increasingly early sunsets we decided to move the time for the next cleanups forward to be able to enjoy some sunny winter afternoons.
October 27, 2018: The show must go on
This Saturday Barcelona was drowning and the situation at the beach was no different. We wrapped ourselves up in rain clothes and got on the way, because we knew that the waves were washing a lot of trash to the beach, while the wind blew the trash from the beach into the sea. Unfortunately the meeting point stayed empty but we got started and filled up our bags. This time there were cans everywhere, especially on the promenade rolling around towards the beach. Interestingly those parts with bins also had the most cans on the ground. We can assure you that the wind did not blow them out of the bins. On top of that did we find a big amount of plastic bags under the wooden part of the promenade, that were left when the street sellers had to flee from the rain. In the end 4.65 kg of trash was collected. We went home satisfied with what we achieved under these conditions and dreaming about a sunny next Saturday.
October 20, 2018: We are growing!
After a successful first cleanup we couldn't wait to get back to the beach one week later. And as we found out, we were not the only ones. While more than half the crew from the week before turned up again, a group of lovely students from all over the world joined us as well. The result: 13.45 kg of plastic that we were able to pick up within only one hour. Like the first time, the big majority of trash was cigarettes, straws and cans. The typical leftovers at the beaches of Barcelona.
At this point we can explain how we take care of the trash after the cleanup. We take all the bags to the containers next to the beach, that are divided into glass, plastic, paper and other trash. Into these containers we divide our collected rubbish, so that it enters into the "normal" recycling cycle.
Again we had great support from the other people at the beach, who had a kind word for each member of our crew. Let's put this positive atmosphere into action guys!!
October 13, 2018: Our very first clean up
With great excitement we got on our way to the beach, not knowing how many people might join us. We were amazed that not only our friends and colleagues took their time to come to Barceloneta, but the word even spread through Europe and we had some unexpected guests. When everybody was equipped with bags, gloves and t-shirts we took our action to the beach. It was uplifting to get a lot of positive feedback from the other people at the beach and many said they would like to join us the next weekends. We will see how many will make that promise come true, but we know at the same time that only our presence has made people think twice about their behavior at the beach. All of us took a huge amount of positive energy and motivation from our first cleanup, that will get our initiative going.
